Insect repellent – Why stop the nasties...

Are you going on holidays soon?

Maybe you’re travelling abroad or staying in Ireland? Regardless, an important item to have in your bag is insect repellent. There are many insect repellents available to the public for sale OTC (over the counter) and which you can also purchase online with Drinagh Pharmacy (Click here).

Why is insect repellent important?

Repellents have prevented a number of cases of malaria, dengue fever, encephalitis and other mosquito-born diseases. While mosquitos in Ireland will not cause any diseases in humans according to the HSE, in other parts of the world, particularly the warmer countries Mosquitoes can cause serious illness and even death.

Insect repellents also keep ticks away, which can cause Lyme’s Disease. This is a serious disease and common enough in Ireland. They are particularly common in the county and rural areas, so if you’re planning a trip away to an isolated area, where there are lots of mountains, grass, fields etc, you need to be mindful of ticks and have an insect repellent on hand.

How is Lyme disease caused?

Ticks carry a bacterial disease called Lyme borreliosis, or Lyme disease, not all ticks carry it, similar to the mosquito, and ticks infect humans by sucking the blood of infected animals. According to https://mountaintrails.ie.

Around 50 -100 cases of Lyme disease are reported in Ireland each year.

Symptoms may appear after 3 or 4 days, but may take several weeks to appear. Common symptoms are a bull’s-eye rash at the site of the bite, and flu like symptoms, headache, fatigue and fever.

What other insects should I be concerned about?

Other popular insects around the world that will cause annoyance are flies, midges and wasps. While wasps will sting, and midges bite, flies can just annoy you and it’s just safer to not attract them to your person in the first place!

Is there good and bad repellents?

Well, yes! The best ingredient to have in an insect repellent is DEET. This has been identified as the most affective ingredient to repel all types of insects. Drinagh Pharmacy only use repellents that have DEET in them, so you’re safe to order the Jungle insect repellent brand online HERE
